In late 2023, CNX unveiled a first-of-its-kind collaboration on environmental monitoring, data collection, and real-time disclosures with Pennsylvania’s Governor Josh Shapiro and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (“PA DEP”). We call this effort Radical Transparency.
Radical Transparency means CNX will monitor air and water quality for operations across our footprint and open source this data in real-time via a public website. Additionally, CNX will publicly disclose all chemicals intended to be used for drilling and hydraulic fracturing before they are used, with no trade secrets. These disclosures create a mutual trust that will serve as the basis for future cooperation and real environmental and economic progress. The air quality data is collected by Clean Air Engineering, an accredited third party, and shared with the PA DEP and with CNX at the same time, this provides further transparency and confidence to the public in its reliability.
This unprecedented brand of transparency is good for resident and worker health, for economic development, for energy security, for the environment, and for community investment. Through our Radical Transparency program, we aim to lead the industry to a new era of responsible domestic energy development.
Successful engagement with the communities in which we work, including the Alle-Kiski Valley, starts with understanding how we can better collaborate with our stakeholders through transparency, dialogue, and active listening. Through this process, we work together to solve community issues, promote economic opportunities, and build relationships to help our region thrive. We have heard our communities and concerned residents asking for data related to human health, and we have seen them left confused and empty handed from the results of flawed studies and inflammatory media headlines. We stand ready to respond.
We begin with a firm belief that the natural gas industry is essential, responsible, and inherently good for society at large.
The natural gas industry has a history of placing the safety of the community and workers as top priorities. For generations in Appalachia, the community is and has been the energy industry, and vice versa. Workers and leaders in the natural gas industry live in local communities, often near industry sites and facilities. Their children drink the same water as other children, and we all breathe the same air.
