Green Initiatives
CNX works diligently to preserve the natural environment where we live and operate. We partner with conservationists in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia to protect endangered species, improve biodiversity and fortify local water resources. We also develop technology to harness energy from natural sources and provide near zero emissions energy.
Our current projects and partnerships that you can get involved with include:
Stream and Wetland Mitigation Banking
CNX has partnered with Ecosystem Investment Partners to help revitalize streams and wetlands across its extensive surface land base throughout the Appalachian region. The partners are working together to provide high-quality stream and wetland mitigation credits for the responsible development of Pennsylvania industries while creating lasting environmental benefits. Appalachian Valley Improved Forest Management Project
CNX has dedicated approximately 34,000 acres in southwest Virginia to forest preservation for the biodiversity of native hardwood trees, carbon sequestration, and the protection of endangered bat species. The project is a partnership with Climeco, and also includes acreage for the Virginia Division of Wildlife Resources and the Rocky Mountain Elk reintroduction project. Learn more about this project. Bat Stewardship
Bat populations are a vital, yet often overlook part of the North American ecosystem that face increasing threats from modern development and disease. Appalachia is home to many species of bat, including at least four currently endangered species and more proposed to be added to the endangered species list. In our ongoing effort to preserve these animals, CNX Green Ventures and its partners have set out to build one of the largest man-made bat hibernacula on the continent.
